What is a CAGE code, and how is it different from a UEI?+
A CAGE (Commercial and Government Entity) code is a 5-character identifier assigned to entities doing business with the federal government. The UEI (Unique Entity Identifier) is the 12-character SAM.gov ID that replaced the DUNS number. CageCheck resolves either to the same vendor record.
What does the expiration countdown mean?+
Every SAM registration lapses 365 days after it is activated. SAM emails reminders at 60, 30, and 15 days before expiration. CageCheck shows the days remaining so you can renew on time (free at sam.gov) — or opt in to an email reminder.
Where does the data come from?+
The main lookup uses a dated SAM.gov public entity extract and an exact-ID SAM API fallback. Each result shows its source date. Exclusions are a separate daily dataset: if that coverage was not loaded, CageCheck says so instead of treating the absence as a clear result.
Can CageCheck confirm a vendor is not debarred?+
Not from an entity snapshot alone. CageCheck flags a match only when a verified exclusions source was checked, and labels coverage unavailable otherwise. Always run the official SAM.gov exclusions search before a contracting or payment decision.
