Why a one-to-one assumption can fail

How to validate a UEI lookup result
A 12-character UEI is more precise than a company name, but the returned record still needs an identity and status check. Match the legal entity first; then decide whether its current SAM registration fits the transaction.
Exact UEI vs. company-name search
Paste the exact UEI from the entity's official paperwork whenever it is available. If you only have a name, search the legal name and review every candidate: brands, DBAs and similarly named companies are not reliable substitutes for an identifier match.
One brand can point to different records
The UEI identifies the registered entity record, not every company that shares a brand or corporate parent. Subsidiaries, related legal entities and separately registered locations can have their own identifier combinations. Use legal name, physical address and CAGE code together to select the right record.

No-result and validation checklist
A missing result here is not, by itself, a final determination that an identifier is invalid.
- Re-copy all 12 characters and check common lookalikes such as O/0 and I/1.
- Match the returned legal name and physical address to the vendor's documents.
- Compare the CAGE code when one is shown, especially when several names look alike.
- If no record appears, retry with the legal name or CAGE code rather than guessing a UEI.
- Confirm high-stakes eligibility or payment decisions on the official SAM.gov record.
